A new Franco-Lebanese project on bio-based composite materials made from hemp
The GeM laboratory at the Saint-Nazaire University Institute of Technology (IUT) recently announced the launch of a new research project focusing on the design of bio-based composite materials made from hemp grown in Lebanon, using additive manufacturing technologies.
The GeM laboratory – the Institute for Research in Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the IUT de Saint-Nazaire – recently announced on LinkedIn the launch of a research project bringing together the laboratory, represented by Amandine Célino and Sylvain Fréour, the Beirut Higher School of Engineering (ESIB), represented by Melissa Said, and the University of Balamand (Lebanon), represented by Anna Maria El Bayssari.
The project will focus on the design of bio-based composite materials made from hemp, using by-products from Lebanese agriculture through additive manufacturing technologies. The research will focus in particular on the behaviour of these materials in a humid environment, as well as on the impact of water absorption on their properties and structural durability. It is receiving financial support from the Scientific Council of the Saint-Nazaire University Institute of Technology (IUT) and Saint Joseph University in Beirut.
The GeM laboratory states in its post that Melissa Said was a PhD student at the laboratory, during which time she conducted research into the development of environmentally friendly composite materials aimed at reducing the industry’s carbon footprint, particularly in the transport sector. This work has resulted in two joint scientific publications, and a third study, focusing on modelling the hygromechanical behaviour of plant-fibre-reinforced biocomposites, is currently being finalised.
